Pattern Notes & Updates

Here you’ll find notes, tips, and updates related to Broadcloth Studio quilt patterns. Most often, this means extra guidance to support the instructions, but if an update or correction is ever needed, it will be posted here too.

How to Read the Cutting Instructions

Depending on the pattern and how it’s constructed, you’ll either see cutting diagrams (especially if the cuts go beyond width-of-fabric/WOF strips) or instructions written in list form. When written as a list, the strip size comes first (WOF), followed by how many strips to cut (in parentheses), and then the sub-cuts you’ll make from those strips. Here’s an example of how to read it:

The instructions always show:

  • the strip size (WOF),

  • how many strips to cut (in parentheses),

  • and the sub-cuts you’ll make from those strips.

Note: Sometimes, to optimize your fabric and reduce waste, I’ll combine different sizes on one WOF strip. Start by cutting the full WOF-width pieces first, then trim the strip down to the smaller sub-cuts. I always try to order the cuts in “descending” order to make the process easy to follow.

For example:

Cut 5" × WOF (3), then sub-cut as follows:

  • 5" × WOF (2): 5" × 5" (8)

  • 5" × WOF (1): 5" × 5" (4); 4½" × 4½" (4)

means:

  • Cut three 5"-wide strips from selvage to selvage.

  • From each of the first two strips, cut (8) 5″ × 5″ squares for (16) 5″ × 5″ squares total

  • From the third strip, cut (4) 5″ × 5″ squares and (4) 4½″ × 4½″ squares.
